Hartwick Hanson: Void and Form
Waterbury Wine & Spirits was to present “Void and Form,” a collection of sculptures by artist Hartwick Hanson. Fom his Big Sur woodshop that’s perfectly perched above the Pacific Ocean, to our small shop in the back of Brooklyn, the pieces transformed our shop into a totem that drew fans of the artists from the corners of America. The opening reception was held on Sunday August 4, 2024.
As partners, we’ve been huge fans of Hartwick from his work in the Brooklyn music scene to professional work as a designer at Colossal Media, and as a hand carved printmaker for many years. Recently, his work’s aesthetic has reached an iconic form; immediately recognizable with timeless shapes and profiles that have impact from the onset. We’ve had one of his “Redwood Hand(s)” in the shop since opening and he also illustrated our S. Silverstein-inspired flyer from last year.
Artist’s statement from the show:
“Hartwick Hanson is a sculptor and woodworker based in Big Sur who works primarily with salvaged wood. He is interested in primitive forms and the entropic effect of landscape on lumber which has been distanced from its original purpose.”
We were incredibly proud to mark this era in the artist’s career with his works hanging in our shop for a few short weeks.
